Como resumen de todas las cuestiones marciales y tradicionales, la popularidad de las artes marciales ha explotado recientemente. El resurgimiento del interés por ellas se le puede atribuir a la práctica como forma de ejercicio o de auto defensa –hoy en día las artes marciales orientales de China, Japón y Corea son inmensamente populares y se practican en todas partes.

Sin embargo, lo más significativo es que el género de las artes marciales, se ha convertido en los últimos 30 años en uno de los favoritos de los medios de comunicación populares. Las artes marciales actuales, popularizadas por los libros, las historietas y especialmente por las películas –previamente territorio de los monjes guerreros y los peregrinos espirituales- son hoy aceptadas como moneda corriente dentro de la cultura popular.
