El Premio X

A principios del siglo XX se empezaron a ofrecer premios a aviadores en ciernes para alentarlos a desarrollar vuelos propulsados. El objetivo del Premio Ansari X era hacer lo mismo para los vuelos espaciales en el siglo XXI, con la esperanza de que esto eventualmente condujera al desarrollo del viaje espacial comercial.

El Premio X ofrecía 10 millones de dólares al primer equipo que de manera privada ideara, construyera y lanzara una nave espacial que pudiera llevar a tres personas a 100 km. por encima de la Tierra y retornarlas a salvo. El equipo tendría que hacer esto dos veces en dos semanas para obtener el premio.

26 equipos de 7 países participaron por varios años en esta competencia. El premio fue entregado en Noviembre del 2004 a Mojave Aerospace Ventures en California, Estados Unidos.

El equipo, liderado por Burt Rutan, voló su nave SpaceShipOne exitosamente hasta el espacio el 29 de Septiembre y el 4 de Octubre del 2004.
